The remarkable Unique Identity Programme, “Aadhar”, has laid the foundation for a new age of easy and flexible functioning of services and receiving government subsidies for the citizens. The predominant use of Aadhar number has helped the government in streamlining the distribution of rations, LPG subsidy, providing bank account for the marginalized people, and so on. Now, getting a new mobile connection got even easier. You only have to provide your eAadhar card to your service provider.
eAadhar Card – A valid document of Proof of Identity and Proof of Address:
The latest report from Niti Aayog states that the number of downloads of Aadhar card on the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) website has crossed 40 crores. An average 6 lakh downloads are done per day. The reason for an increase in the number of Aadhar card downloads has been attributed to the fact that a lot of service providers have started to accept Aadhar card as a Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA).
Moreover, the downloaded version of Aadhar card has been notified as a valid proof of identity and address by the Reserve Bank of India.

Getting a new mobile connection with your eAadhar Card:
In July 2016, the Department of Telecommunications has clarified that eAadhar card (i.e. the downloaded version of Aadhar card from the UIDAI website) shall be considered as a valid identity and address proof document in order to get a new mobile connection. It has also mentioned that the authorized person working at the point of sale in the shop is responsible for verifying the details of the person (such as name, address, date of birth and gender) who is seeking the new mobile connection.
Earlier this year, Mr. Rajan Mathews, Director General, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and Mr. Ashok Sud, Secretary General, Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India (AUSPI) had presented a case before the Department of Telecommunications for accepting eAadhar card as a valid document for issuing new mobile connection to users.
Importance of eAadhar card:
It is now a widely acknowledged fact that both the hard copy of Aadhaar received through Speed Post and the eAadhar downloaded from the UIDAI website are equally valid.
It has been requested by both COAI and AUSPI that DoT may take necessary actions in informing the service providers about the validity of eAadhar and accept it as a proof of identity and address at the time of issuing new mobile connections.
A vast majority of the population are yet to receive their original hard copy of the Aadhar letter via Speed Post.
Taking into consideration, the delays involved in the delivery of Aadhar cards to residents and the ease with which eAadhar card can be downloaded, the DoT, has therefore taken the appropriate steps in notifying the prospective customers that eAadhar card can be used at the time of applying for new mobile connections.
