The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued directions to suspend the Aadhar seeding (linking of Aadhar with Voter ID) because of Supreme Court order.
Supreme Court directed that Aadhar cannot be made mandatory for citizens of India which has led to ECI suspending Aadhar Seeding. Know the whole story behind the Supreme Court order with this post.
Supreme Court Directions for Aadhar Seeding:
Last year, on 11th August 2015, Supreme Court had directed the Government to give wide publicity in the electronic and print media including radio and television networks that it is not mandatory for a citizen to obtain an Aadhar card.
Supreme Court issued an order which directed that Aadhar cannot be mandatory for availing any benefit due to a citizen and hence Aadhar Seeding too cannot be forced upon.
Following the Supreme Court’s latest direction, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has suspended the activity of linking the Voter ID – Aadhar seeding.
It has issued strict instructions to the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of states to this effect:
1. Union of India shall give wide publicity in the electronic and print media including radio and television networks that it is not mandatory for a citizen to obtain an Aadhaar card;
2. The production of an Aadhaar card will not be condition for obtaining any benefits otherwise due to a citizen;
3. The Unique Identification Number or the Aadhaar card will not be used by the respondents for any purpose other than the PDS Scheme and in particular for the purpose of distribution of foodgrains, etc. and cooking fuel, such as kerosene. The Aadhaar Card may also be used for the purpose of the LPG Distribution Scheme;
4. The information about an individual obtained by the Unique Identification Authority of lndia while issuing an Aadhaar card shall not be used for any other purpose, save as above, except as may be directed by a Court for the purpose of criminal investigation.

Aadhar Seeding – Some Background:
Aadhar seeding was proposed so that citizens of India can get the direct benefits from the government but as Supreme Court issued an order it has raised many questions for Aadhar seeding.
Aadhar Card is a 12 Digit Unique Identification Number issued by UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) after due scrutiny of background Data and Scanning of the Biometric of Individuals. Aadhar Card is not a proof of citizenship but can serve as an effective proof of Individual Identity.
There were reports that Aadhar Card could get Statutory Status – Click Here to know more on that. However till the order is officially made, the ECI is following the Supreme Court’s order which is currently in force.
The Supreme Court was dealing with a bunch of petitions filed against the Government’s push to make Aadhar mandatory and its use for various schemes by implementing Aadhar Seeding.
Is Aadhar Seeding with Voter ID Cards Useful?
Aadhar seeding is useful as it helps to prevent many fraud activities, for example if one were to link their voter Id Card to the Aadhar card, only a single Voter ID could be linked to a single Aadhar number, hence preventing frauds.
Apart from that there are numerous other benefits and speeding up of a lot process with the help of Aadhar Seeding. Even things like Passports can be availed within a week if you have your Aadhar Card – Read the full story here.
But despite having so many benefits of Aadhar seeding, the ECI issued directions to all CEOs directing them to suspend the Aadhar seeding by following Supreme Court order.
The directions said that linking activity undertaken as part of the NERPAP (National Electoral Rolls Purification & Authentication Program) stands suspended with immediate effect and no more collection of Aadhar numbers from electors will be done by any election authority.
As well as Election commission of India also directed all CEOs to immediately stop all publicity given to the seeding exercise and remove all material on the websites to be removed.
We can only hope that this issue can be resolved as soon as possible so that citizens of India can get benefits from Aadhar.
