In a recent endeavor by the University Grants Commission (UGC), having an Aadhar Card for UGC fellowship has been made compulsory and has asked applicants for scholarships and fellowships to provide their Aadhar numbers. This has made Aadhar card mandatory for anyone who wants to apply or has already applied for the scholarship/fellowship.
Aadhar Card Mandatory: The Public Notice
The recent initiatives of the government and various autonomous bodies have been creating greater value of Aadhar card in the lives of Indian citizens. The University Grants Commission recently issued a public notice which can be found here. The public notice requested the applicants to provide their Aadhar card for UGC fellowship. This is in connection with its potential aim of connecting UGC scholarships and fellowships with the Aadhar Card database of the applicant.
The UGC said on Wednesday:
“Aadhaar will be used as an identifier for availing benefits of the UGC scholarship/fellowship schemes.”
This will help the UGC to run an identification test of the applicant with the help of the Aadhar card number provided by him/her. Also, this is one of the steps toward the DBT, that is, direct benefit transfer initiative of the government.
UGC Makes Aadhar Card Mandatory for Applicants
The UGC has also asked the students who have already applied for 2017 – 18 to update their application. They have been asked to update their Aadhar card details in the light of the public notice that made Aadhar card mandatory. Following is the public notice:

The government and many autonomous institutions under the Government of India have made Aadhar card mandatory. Though the order of the Supreme Court of India said that Aadhar Card was no longer mandatory, there are several recent initiatives which have proved Aadhar card very useful.
Some of them are mentioned below:
- Caste and Domicile Certificate are also now linked with Aadhar Card.
- In a pilot project, Aadhar-linked SIM cards began to be sold in some cities .
- NRIs can now open NPS Accounts online if they have Aadhar Card or PAN card according to the Finance Ministry’s statement.
Hence, it is now very important for each citizen of India to have an Aadhar Card. You will find it easy to connect with government schemes (like DBT) if you have an Aadhar Card.
